Seattle Marathon 2010

Seattle Marathon 2010!

In 2010, more than 17,000 people ran the 26.2 marathon route or 13.1 half marathon. That year, the Sports Medicine Club (SMC) at Bastyr University provided post marathon services to at least 170 people who participated in the marathon. Dr. Masahiro Takakura, DC, ND, Lac, CKTI, a member of the Bastyr medical faculty and a Certified Kinesio Taping Instructor, has assisted the student volunteers for several years now.

Darci Davis, a 2011 Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) candidate, led SMC at Bastyr at that time. She arrived at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall by 6:00 a.m. to begin setting up the station “behind the blue curtains.”  By 7:00 o’clock several volunteers had joined her to prep for the arrival of the race finishers in the tent.  The race began at 7:15, and by 10 in the morning until 2 p.m. there was a steady stream of people waiting in line for the chance to get personalized attention for their aches and pains.

With a total of seven tables, 15 volunteers and two doctors to supervise the students, the activity was a big success. Dr. Takakura was there to make sure that each volunteer, no matter what their level of experience, was able to provide quality care as they performed muscle energy stretching, massage, and Kinesio Taping.  The ND students rotated every hour and were able to easily make 10 patient contacts each.

The runners truly appreciated the free services. It was a great experience to assist runners of a wide age range with anything from lower back pain to foot drop.  One 2010 volunteer noted, “If I could change anything, I would add more tables and more volunteers, to experience the inspiration felt when assisting people who have pushed themselves to and through their endurance levels and come out the other side stronger.”

In 2010 more than 40,000 people passed through the Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon Expo during the two days leading up to the main event on Sunday morning. From its beginnings as a local event, the Seattle Marathon continues to expand its geographical reach year after year, with all 50 states and many other countries represented at the 2010 event.

The Seattle Marathon began modestly in 1970 when a group of friends from the University of Washington decided to hold their own running event. 38 runners started the first annual event, with 31 of them completing the full 26.2 miles. From these modest beginnings the Seattle Marathon “family of events” has risen to become one of the largest and most influential mass-participation runs on the West Coast.
